Dosage

Adults: oral 20–80 mg once daily, titrate. IV 20–40 mg slow push for acute decompensation.

Side effects

Hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia, hyperuricemia, ototoxicity at high IV doses, dehydration.

Contraindications

Anuria, severe hypokalemia, hepatic coma, sulfonamide hypersensitivity.

Description

Furosemide blocks the Na-K-2Cl cotransporter in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle, producing rapid and powerful diuresis. Used for acute pulmonary oedema, decompensated heart failure, and refractory hypertension.
