Natural clay adsorbent for acute diarrhea.

Generic name: Diosmectite

Dosage

Adults: 1 sachet (3 g) three times daily. Children <1 year: 1 sachet/day; 1–2 years: 1–2 sachets/day; >2 years: 2–3 sachets/day. Mix with water or food.

Side effects

Mild constipation. Generally very well tolerated.

Contraindications

Take ≥2 hours apart from other medications to avoid impairing absorption. Fructose intolerance (some formulations).

Description

Diosmectite is a smectite clay that coats the intestinal mucosa, binds water and toxins, and shortens diarrhea duration. Widely prescribed in Vietnam for acute pediatric and adult diarrhea alongside oral rehydration.
