Stimulant laxative for short-term constipation relief.

Dosage

Adults: 5–10 mg orally at bedtime, or 10 mg rectally as needed. Children 6–12: 5 mg orally.

Side effects

Abdominal cramps, diarrhea, electrolyte imbalance with prolonged use.

Contraindications

Bowel obstruction, acute abdomen, severe dehydration, children <6.

Description

Bisacodyl stimulates enteric nerves of the colon to increase peristalsis and water/electrolyte secretion. Tablets work in 6–12 hours; rectal suppositories within 15–60 minutes.
