Dosage

Adults: 5 mg once daily, may increase to 10 mg after 1–2 weeks.

Side effects

Peripheral oedema (especially ankles), flushing, headache, dizziness.

Contraindications

Cardiogenic shock, severe aortic stenosis, unstable angina, severe hepatic impairment.

Description

Amlodipine is a long-acting dihydropyridine that relaxes vascular smooth muscle, lowering blood pressure and reducing afterload. First-line in hypertension and chronic stable angina. Once-daily dosing with a slow onset and offset.
